• Mpumalanga Bird Flyway Project

  Since 2022, Mpumalanga has seen a sharp rise in applications for utility-scale wind energy facilities, drawn by the province's spare electrical grid capacity. But the same escarpment targeted for wind development is also home to some of South Africa's most threatened bird species. In 2024, DARDLEA appointed the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) to track and tag birds most vulnerable to turbine collision, so future wind energy applications can be assessed using real movement data.
