This occasion is encouraging because it comes at a time when there is a huge need for relevant people to take the sector to another level, coinciding also with our efforts as a department, to encourage and instil agriculture to young minds at school level.

    It gives me great pleasure standing before you tonight, as we recognize the sterling job and the immense contribution by our Veterinary Public Health officials, as we gathered for our 2nd Provincial Abattoir Rating Scheme Award ceremony. Let me pass my appreciation to our Vet Public Health and Communications officials, for organizing and arranging this event. The response displays that you are sensitively receptive to the needs of the abattoir owners and livestock farmers.

  • Remarks by honourable MEC Mrs KC Mashego-Dlamini to the youth day commemoration in Tjakastad

    This activity is taking place when the eyes of the country are all focusing on the Policy Conference of the ANC, which is the governing party in this country. Indeed those representatives of various communities attending the conference will debate issues that have the impact on our lives. The conference will come up with policy proposals that will shape and change the manner in which we are doing things. Amongst those issues that the conference will look into is the creation of jobs for young people, skills development for our young people and economic development of the country so that it is able to absorb a large contingent of unemployed young persons, which is estimated to be above 35% in the country.

    I stand before you tonight, choosing to remind our Agricultural extension officers of their role. You are intermediaries between research and farmers. You must operate as facilitators and communicators, helping our farmers in their decision-making and ensuring that appropriate knowledge is implemented in order to obtain the best results. Farmers need agricultural information on natural resources, animals, crops, and on how to utilize the farmland, and how 2 to construct proper irrigation schemes, economic use and storage of water, combat animal disease, and save on the cost of farming equipment and procedures.

    The matric pass rate for 2011 in the province saw an increase from 56.8% to 64.8 % showing the largest improvement with an increase of eight percent from 2010, this is indeed praiseworthy. “To be a finalist and a winner of awards is special and it truly makes a difference to be acknowledged for all the hard work”. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with a great sense of pride that I can address our top learners from the White Hazy Circuit who were in schools which are above all a community, where individuals are nurtured and understood as individuals with individual circumstances, where they foster the sense of a common identity and good working relationships, this has proven to be schools to produce commendable and quality results.
