CONTROL MEASURES PUT IN PLACE AFTER AN OUTBREAK OF AVIAN INFLUENZA IN MPUMALANGA

The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs has called on members of the public to report any high number of deaths of chickens to its local State Vet, Animal Health Technician or Extension Officers. This after samples collected from a farm in Villiers, on the banks of the Vaal River bordering the Free State, yielded positive results for a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, H5N8. The South African Veterinary Authority was notified about the high deaths of the flock in Villiers on 22 June 2017.
